It is late summer, 1940, and German bombers are raining down fire on Britain’s cities. Night after night, bombers swarm in the skies above the city of Liverpool and its important port, which keeps vital supplies coming in to Britain. When the Speechley family lose their home in a bombing raid, Sheila and her mother and brother Victor have to move wherever they’re sent – to a rundown house in another part of Birkenhead. There they meet Jean and Billy Adams, the children next door – and Toffee, the horse Billy looks after. But Billy and Victor become sworn enemies. As the bombers threaten from the sky, the boys’ battles bring all the children into dreadful danger.
